The field of technical writing is somewhat misunderstood, especially to anyone who has not worked in information technology. However, there are some examples of technical writing that have been represented in the media. The most famous example might be the "Tina the Tech Writer" character who has made multiple appearances in the Dilbert cartoons. See Tina the Tech Writer here.
My favorite (but less famous example) is integral to a TV show that was short-lived called Andy Richter Controls the Universe. See background at IMDB site here. In this example, Andy Richter (who shares a name with the actor Andy Richter, and is actually played by the actor Andy Richter in the show - a real convergence of fiction and reality), is "forced" to work as a technical writer. The field is joked and looked down upon in the series. Still, being a technical writer myself, this was one of my all time favorite TV series, and it just lasted two seasons.
With the growing convergence of fan-based participation in the media, we are seeing people create careers based on their writing skills in the free publishing environment of the Internet. Consider Perez Hilton. Learn more about Perez here at IMDB.
He developed a career for himself writing a blog about Hollywood celebrities. He himself is now a celebrity. He encountered some infamy at first when he was known for bashing stars and sharing hurtful gossip. He eventually apologized for the crass approach and continues to be part of the celebrity gossip scene is a softer way. His communication skills and grassroots fan base led to fame and fortune.
With all due respect to the portrayal of technical writing in the media, there are actually many growing opportunities for technical writers in every aspect of the convergence of media from television, to the internet, to the mobile applications that run on phones, to simulated games.
